Resilient Urbanism at the World Urban Forum in Medellin

What are experts around the world saying about equity and resiliency in cities? Two members of the Resilient Urbanism team (Anna Konotchick and Kate Crawford) are in Medellin, Colombia this week for the World Urban Forum, where the theme of this year’s event is “Urban Equity in Development” and one sub-theme is resilient cities. We will be live blogging and tweeting from WUF (@ResilientUrb #WUF7_self_recovery) and previewing some blog post material on self-recovery after urban disaster.

The 2010 Haitian earthquake has spurred new developments in urban humanitarian response, with varying effects on self-recovery and long-term development. This networking session will highlight the relationship between humanitarian action, urban equity and recovery by focusing on (1) challenges and opportunities posed by the massive, though largely unguided, self-recovery actions of earthquake-affected populations; and (2) nascent efforts to better understand, engage and harness these efforts. Through three featured presentations, a panel discussion, and the display of informational posters, the session will explore ways in which promoting self-recovery can create an environment for more equitable urban development – in Haiti and elsewhere.
